Pier 46

If I knew then that I could bear losing you

If I knew that living trumps grief

If I knew that after dying a thousand deaths,

I would survive with an incredible cowardly courage,

I would have spared you my terror

I might have known to laugh with you

Might have stopped fortifying our walls of sand

Put down our weapons; turned our backs to the coming gale

And in defiant surrender; I would have let us live.
